Arboretum

Here is everything you need to know about our excursion to the National Arborteum.

Where and what

National Arboretum!   We will play in the fabulous acorn playground, enjoy morning tea overlooking amazing views of Canberra’s natural landscapes, take a delightful guided preschool tour of the trees – looking for birds, nests, spiders, insects, and other fascinating things – before heading back inside to be enchanted by a story told in the bonsai garden.

When

Date as per our email sent to families.

Timings  and Transport

Families arrange their own transport to drop off children at the Arboretum.  Click for  directions

Please bring your child to the Village Centre building (a dome shaped building next to the acorn playground at the top of the hill) at 9:15am, where one of the teachers will welcome you.  If you are running late, please ring the GAP mobile on 0422 525 646.

The staff and children will return to the GAP by ACTION bus.   We will depart the Arboretum on ACTION Bus #81 at 12:35 pm from the bus stop right outside the Village Centre.  We disembark the bus on McCaughey Street in Turner at 1:05pm, and walk 400 meters to arrive back at the GAP by around 1:30pm.  We resume our normal program there.

As usual with public buses, there are no seatbelts and children are required to remain seated while the bus is moving.

Pick up is at 3:30 at the GAP, as usual.  (Or 5pm if your child normally stays for dance class that day.)

Cost

Your term fee covers your excursion fee, including entry and transport.

What to Bring

Please pack all your child’s belongings in one backpack or bag (clearly labeled with their name) that he/she can carry home on the bus by himself/herself.  Please pack a morning tea (separate from lunch) which can easily be eaten at the arboretum (eg rice crackers or fruit; not yoghurt).  Please keep in mind that we won’t have access to a refrigerator while on the excursion.  It can be windy (and cold in winter) at the top of the hill at the arboretum, so dress appropriately.

Accompanying staff and volunteers

There will be three or more GAP teachers/director supervising this excursion.

Parent volunteers are needed.  Siblings are allowed on this excursion with their volunteer parent, as long as we maintain our proper supervision ratio.

We will maintain a 4:1 ratio of children:adults for this excursion.  (A class of 22 children requires 6 adults.)

Permission

Please sign the Excursion Authorisation Signature Sheet when you drop off your child on the day of the excursion.

Contingency Plans

If we are running late returning to GAP, we will ring the Playschool management to let them know.  In the highly unlikely event the bus has a break-down which would cause us to arrive at GAP after pick up time, the Playschool will notify parents directly.

We are looking forward to an exciting excursion!
